Now this was the difficult bit, welding the shaft properly and keeping it straight. I was going to weld it between centres, but in the end I decided to give it to a friend who is a coded welder and he's done a magnificent job.
I've mocked up the box and everything fits, but running a clock over the shaft, it is running a few thou out of true, so tonight's job is to rig it up on the lathe with the dial gauge and true it up.
The heat created by the welding operation appears to have hardened the shaft to some degree, so I'm going to true up the shaft, reharden it and bolt everything up. I'm convinced it's going to be more than strong enough, but we'll find out shall we?
Probably half way over the Alps!
